FIBROMYALGIA
According to the American College of Rheumatology,
fibromyalgia is the second most common rheumatic disorder in the United
States behind arthritis. This ailment affects between 4-7 millions Americans
and is most common in women aged 30-50. Patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia
often suffer a wide range of debilitating symptoms, including fatigue,
widespread musculoskeletal pain, stiffness and tenderness in the soft
tissues, and sleep disorders. According to Western medicine, there is
no single cause of fibromyalgia and there is no long-term treatment for
the condition.
Short-term treatments for fibromyalgia include stretching
exercises, local applications of heat, and gentle massage. Similarly,
small doses of antidepressants or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
may be helpful, but they are typically used only to help patients sleep
and often carry unwanted side effects.
There are a number of different approaches that TCM
practitioners can take to help improve quality of life for their patients
suffering from fibromyalgia. The first step is moving Qi and Blood and
warming the channels. Promoting circulation and removing blockages can
help the person's body fight their illness more effectively. Warming the
channels can dispel Cold congealing with Blood, remove areas of stagnation,
and promote circulation. It is likely that the pathogens that cause fibromyalgia
prefer a low oxygen, low temperature environment, and that the person's
immune system can fight fibromyalgia in a high oxygen, high circulation,
high temperature environment.
Acupuncture, moxabustion, infrared heat therapy, and
Chinese herbs can safely be used for long-term treatment of fibromyalgia.
Following nutritional guidelines and exercises set forth by your acupuncturist
can speed up the recovery process to achieve optimal health and live pain
free.
