Addiction has become a big issue in our society. In its most severe form, addiction can ruin one's relationships and take lives. Clinically, what we encounter as acupuncturists on a day-to-day basis is a group of people who struggle to quit cigarette smoking. Experts agree that addiction to substances such as heroin and cocaine require much more comprehensive program which include individual counseling, urine testing and group therapy in conjunction with acupuncture.
Studies show that when acupuncture needles are inserted into the body, it changes the blood flow to certain key areas of the brain. One of the areas affected is the limbic system, which controls our sense of pleasure, emotional behavior and drive. By affecting this "reward center" of the brain, acupuncture helps to curve cravings and restore a sense of well-being. Since its introduction to the West in the 70's, acupuncture has been known to trigger the body to produce more endorphins, thereby reducing the perception of pain. The endorphin mechanism also explains why acupuncture is so helpful in easing withdrawal symptoms.
Acupuncture is very effective to treat addictions because it can immediately reduce withdrawal symptoms. After acupuncture, patients feel a state of relaxation without feeling tired. They feel grounded and alert. The treatments may be performed once a day or less frequently depending on the individual's need. Small, sterilized needles are placed in the outer ear and left for 20 to 45 minutes.
